Music for Monarchs & Merchants

A programme comparing and contrasting the two faces of baroque patronage, aristocratic and mercantile, with music from the royal court of Versailles, and the wealthy trading centre of Hamburg. Both cities acted as magnets for musicians, and some of the leading composers of the period were associated with both centres. In one case there is also an American connection — Balbastre was the leading harpsichord teacher of his day, and one of his pupils was the visiting Thomas Jefferson! Music by Bach, Buxtehude, Mattheson, Telemann, Couperin, Forqueray & Marais.
